Wecken or Canning
Hey all,
Now that it seems that I’ll have a kitchen garden soon, I’m looking into the process of wecken or canning. I k now it can be time consuming, but I’m looking forward to saving the food I’ve grown in Spring and Summer for the Winter. And it also gives me the opportunity to make nice cooking gifts for birthdays, Christmas and an event we have here in the Netherlands: Sinterklaas. He was a holy man who made sure that children had little gifts. He died at December 6th and we celebrate his idea at December 5th. It’s kinda like Christmas where everyone gives gifts too.
Anyway, I’ve been looking into the canning process and I think it’s very interesting. There are several things I need to have:
- Canning kettle
- Canning jars
- Thermometer
- Rubber rings for the canning jars
- Canning recipes
Another thing that apparently works too are jars with a screw lid. Right now I’m saving the old jars I get from the vegetables and fruit from dinner. That way I already have a basis to start with. And with fruit, vegetables and more as a harvest from my future Kitchen Garden, it will be wonderful to be able to save it all!
I read on a blog that the author was wondering whether she should freeze everything or can it all. Apparently canning is on the long run also cheaper, both for your wallet as for the environment. And I want my kitchen garden for both reasons
Also, freezing means I’ll probably would need an extra freezer, which would take up a lot of space and before I’d be able to cook it, I’d have to defrost everything. While something that is canned doesn’t need to be defrosted. I can use it immediately. So, that’s another reason to can.
Granted, I’ll need to have a place to store all the jars….. Now that might be a slight problem, kinda like with the Freezer. But perhaps I can convince my hubby to help me to make a place to store all the jars. I think a rearrangement of the house is coming up
For now I don’t really have anything yet, but I’m going to make a list of everything I need for canning my future food. Hopefully I can find a few second-hand kettles and jars for canning. That would be nice. I think a new kettle (or more) would simply be too expensive.
I know that there’s a museum where you can follow a workshop for canning, so I’m going to see if and when I can do this workshop. That way I’m already prepared. And of course I can use vegetables and fruit from the supermarket for practice. Just to see how it works.
I am already looking forward to seeing shelves filled with jars with fruit and vegetables!
Have fun everyone!
Starting with Immunotherapy
Hey all,
Well, it’s final! After a few tests my Allergy Specialist told me I can start with Immunotherapy for three of my allergies:
- Trees
- Grasses
- Cats
Although I know that as of November 26th I’ll have to go to the hospital each week for a period of four months for my injections and after that once every month for a period of about 3 to 5 years, I am kinda looking forward to it. It’s not going to be easy, but if everything goes well, the Immunotherapy will help my allergies getting less severe. And who knows, maybe it will also have a positive effect on my food allergy, so that I’ll be able to eat things like apples, bananas, melons and much more again! I’m really looking forward to that!
I’ll let you all know how it goes
Have fun!

As for the rest, everything’s rather quiet. James and I both are suffering from a cold, but we’ll get over it
This is it for now.
I’ll see you all later!

3 days into my new job
Hey all,
Finally I sarted my new job last Monday. For now I have to read a lot of things to get up to speed with everything that’s happening here and the things I need to do in the future. It is fun though! Today I’m here by myself. It’s a small company so I don’t have a lot of collegues. My boss is on a holiday, the secretary is free today and the others had to go to a conference which I will attend tomorrow. That gives me the time to read everything I like in my own rythm.
This week I’m trying out how it is to go to work by car. To be honest I prefer public transport, but it seems I wil be home an hour after I can be home with the car. So…. this week I go to work by car everyday and next week I’ll go to work with Public Transport. If it’s indeed a fact that I’ll be home much later, I think I’ll continue to go by car, instead of public transport. Especially seen the fact that I’d like to spend my evenings with James and… I want to start a Kitchen Garden, so I’ll need time for that too. Half an hour per day should do it, but when I’m home late, that’s not really easy…. So, I’ll have to wait and see. And more importantly, experience how it will be.
Well, so far the latest news about my new job. Have fun everyone!
